Frequently Asked Questions
DAMAGED/FAULTY ITEMS ON DELIVERY
If your furniture has a problem which we failed to catch in QA, or if it is damaged in transit, Kodawari will make all necessary repairs immediately, and at our expense. In the unlikely event the fault can be addressed on-site, we’ll get a carpenter out to you the next working day. In the more likely event that the furniture needs to come back to us, we’ll cover all the costs of shipping both ways, and all costs incurred in rectifying the defect. We also commit to place any repairs at the front of our work queues to minimise delay.
FAULTS THAT ARISE OVER TIME
All Kodawari furniture is guaranteed for 5 years. Should you encounter any problem whatsoever call us and we’ll get someone on-site to assess the issue within a working day. We will then either address it on site, or pay to ship the furniture back to our workshop to be addressed. Once completed, we’ll organise returning the item back to you, at our expense. And, again, we will prioritise remedial work to avoid delay.
WEAR AND TEAR
Looked after properly a piece of Kodawari furniture will last decades (if not centuries), but accidents happen. If you feel your furniture needs attention you can always contact us. We can replace leather inserts, sand-back and refinish tops, replace drawers; in fact there’s virtually nothing we can’t remedy. We only offer this service for our own furniture, and we don’t treat it as a profit-making activity. If you purchase from us, we consider it nothing more than common courtesy to provide you with support on a cost recovery basis.
THE FURNITURE ISN’T AS YOU’D IMAGINED
Buying custom made furniture has risk. There is a chance the completed item will not look as you’d expected. We can’t offer a refund as the item is bespoke. But we do fully commit to not abandoning you. We’ll work with you to form a mutually agreed plan. We can arrange to have the item shipped back to us and re-finish it in another colour, change legs, remove personalised trims etc. We will have to charge on a cost recovery basis, but we will provide complete details of what we’ve spent on labour and materials.
Ultimately we don’t consider our job done until the customer is fully satisfied. And rest assured this has only happened once, when the customer wasn’t happy with a custom colour. In that instance we re-finished the desk in six working days for a cost recovery change (including shipping both ways) of £480.
Yes, absolutely. Nothing we do involves mass production, everything is made by hand, and to order, so incorporating specific requests is very straightforward and frequently has very little impact on the price. We can change sizes, woods, finishes, create custom colours to order, and fit pretty much any of our legs and drawers to any of our tops.
We have not personally audited our suppliers, but we have confirmed with them that they source all their wood sustainably, and also clarified how they do it. Luckily, most of our timber comes from Canada, which has perhaps the finest reputation in the world for protecting and regulating one of its most precious resources.
Almost! Most of our desks feature aluminium legs, which we have made for us. We don’t have the machinery to accurately bend metals. We also buy in the brass handles that feature on most of our desk drawers. Beyond that, we make everything ourselves, by hand, in our Cambridgeshire workshop.
Yes. Every piece of Kodawari furniture comes with an Authenticity Certificate and Five-Year Warranty.
Yes. Exclusively. Our furniture is made from Ash, Maple, Cedar, Eucalyptus, Teak and a small variety of exotic hardwoods. We never use softwoods, not even for drawer liners or carcassing.
We’re lucky in that we’ve managed to keep a reasonably full order book via word of mouth. Intermittently, we do undertake limited advertising on Google, and have
recently experimented a little with Facebook, but that is it.
Kodawari is a young company, but nearly all of the people who work in it are of a ‘certain age’. We’re confident of our skills as master cabinet makers, but we’re not digital natives. We’re also all parents (all of whom saw ‘Adolesence’), and frankly Social Media worries us. We’ve no plans beyond maintaining the most limited presence on Facebook.
Oak is a fantastic wood, but it doesn’t have a very interesting grain pattern when it’s dyed. It is also nearly impossible to dye to the standards we require. In our experience, Oak nearly always interacts with dyes to produce small areas of green discolouration.
Sadly we don’t. Our workshop is too small to incorporate a display area and typically a noisy and dusty space. If you have any questions or concerns why not call us? We’re not a faceless conglomerate, we’re a small group of real people who are very proud of what we do, and who are always more than happy to talk about it.
